How to Choose an NDIS Provider in Melbourne

Melbourne is big. Ask where the workers are.

Greater Melbourne is more than 100 kilometres across. A provider can list every postcode in the city as a "service area" and still have no one within 40 minutes of your house. That shows up as late starts, cancelled shifts and a different face every week. The first question to ask any provider is not where their office is, it is where the Disability Support Practitioner (support worker) who would actually visit you lives.

At Asina we match practitioners to participants by suburb, and we tell you straight if we do not yet have the right person near you. Our Melbourne team works from the CBD out, with practitioners in the inner north, the inner west, the bayside and south-east, the eastern suburbs and the outer west and north.

Questions worth asking any provider

Can I meet my worker before they start? The answer should always be yes, and it should be free. Support happens in your home and your community, so the fit matters more than the CV.

What happens when my worker is sick? Ask who covers, and whether that person has met you. A provider without local depth will cancel.

Can I choose and change my workers? If the answer is "we'll send whoever is available", keep looking.

Can I see my shift notes, schedule and invoices? Some providers still post paper statements months later. You should be able to open an app and see every visit and every dollar.

Are you registered, and does that matter for me? Registered providers can take NDIA-managed plans. Unregistered providers, like Asina, work with self-managed and plan-managed participants, follow the same NDIS Code of Conduct and are overseen by the same NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Ask which you are, then ask how they screen and train their workers.

How is pricing set? The answer should be "in line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits", and you should see the exact rates in your service agreement before anything starts.

Red flags

  • They cannot tell you where their nearest worker to you lives.
  • They want you to sign a service agreement before you have met anyone.
  • Pricing is vague, or they talk about "packages" rather than NDIS line items.
  • You cannot choose or change your workers.
  • Travel is charged but never explained.
  • No local reviews, no local knowledge, no one who can name a cafe near you with step-free access.

What good looks like

A good Melbourne provider is transparent about money, consistent with workers and genuinely local. They will talk about your goals before they talk about their services. They will tell you what they cannot do. And they will make it easy to see what is happening with your plan.

Asina was built by a Disability Support Practitioner after a decade on the frontline, and that is the standard we hold our Melbourne team to. If you are weighing up providers, email Hayley, who leads our Victorian team, or call 0434 786 381. No pressure, just a conversation.
